Vol. 361 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Payment.

155.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a grant has been refused to a student (details supplied) in County Leitrim who is doing a quantity surveying course in the University of Ulster at Jordanstown; and if it is true that he could get grant aid for two years in Bolton Street College but only for one year in Jordanstown.

The student in question, as a holder of a national diploma, must, under the provisions of the VEC scholarships scheme, obtain exemption from the first two years of his proposed degree course in order to be eligible for renewal of scholarship. As he has attained one year's exemption only, he must be deemed ineligible for assistance at this stage but could be considered for assistance when he has been admitted to the fourth and final year of the course.

In the case of a four year degree course, a student obtaining the required two years' exemption will obtain assistance for a further two years whereas a student obtaining only one year's exemption will obtain only one year's further assistance. This provision in the scholarships scheme obtains irrespective of where the college of attendance is located.
