Vol. 361 No. 3

Written Answers. - Poultry Processing Plants.

139.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the poultry processing plants which worked on Tuesday, 15 October 1985; in respect of each such plant, the number of Department of Agriculture staff who were on duty and the extent to which inspection of the kill was carried out; the action it is proposed to take against those factories that worked without the controls laid down by the EC; and the manner in which any produce, produced without inspection, will be disposed of.

Some nine poultry processing plants slaughtered poultry on 15 October and veterinary inspection at those plants was provided by a total of 17 veterinary inspectors.

Poultry processing plants were advised in advance of the possibility of industrial action being taken on 15 October by certain staff of my Department and, as a result, a number of plants did not slaughter on that date. Veterinary inspectors located at poultry plants did not take part in the action and, for those plants which requested it, it was possible to provide the necessary veterinary inspection service for birds slaughtered on that date.
