asked the Minister for Defence the consequences of the decision by the Minister for Justice to proceed with the reconstruction of existing Department of Defence buildings in Spike Island, at Fort Mitchel on his Department and the Irish Army, and in particular the Irish Naval Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Arising from the handing over of Fort Mitchel to the Department of Justice for use as a prison, arrangements were made for the accommodation at the Naval base, Haulbowline and Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig of the Naval Service personnel stationed in the fort. The renovation of the buildings which were recently damaged in the fort is under consideration. The long term development of the fort remains to be determined.
