asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of retired public servants who have been reemployed on a consultancy basis to the public service; and if he will give details.

There are 20 retired public servants engaged on a consultancy basis at present by Government Departments and offices and committees of the Houses of the Oireachtas. My Department do not have responsibility for the engagement of consultants by other public service agencies.

The persons concerned are engaged on the following assignments.

Department of the Taoiseach— Advice on the administration and development of the National Museum. Consultancy advice to the Department in relation to the National Archives.

Department of Education— Special Educational Consultant in the Department of Education. Adviser on long distance walking routes for Cospóir.

Department of Fisheries and Forestry— Consultancy assistance to the Interdepartmental Committee on the Continental Shelf.

Department of Justice— Special legal adviser in the Department of Justice. Specialist advice to the Department in relation to the regulation of explosives.

Houses of the Oireachtas— Legal advice to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Legislation.

Attorney General's Office— Secretary to the Stardust Victims Compensation Tribunal. Legal advice to the Office (two persons). Indexation of statutes for the office.

Department of Communications— Magnetic survey of Ireland for the Meteorological Office.

Office of Public Works— Development of an accounting system. Adviser on the prison building programme. Two persons engaged as consultant architects on construction projects.

Department of Defence— Consultant architect on a construction project. Consultant engineer on a construction project. Consultant actuary for annuity valuation of pension lump sums.
