Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - Galway International Services Park.

66.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the progress which is being made on the development of the Galway international services park; and if he will expedite the planning and construction of the park in view of the present attractiveness of the Galway region, due to the success of the existing service sector, the existence of a specialised workforce due to the foresight of UCG and Galway Regional Technical College and the appreciation of the potential of service sector development as outlined in a recent report by Galway Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

As part of its strategy for the development of the international services sector in Galway, the Industrial Development Authority has purchased a 17 acre site on the campus of UCG and has had an overall plan for the development of the site as a Business Park prepared by consultants. However, I am informed that the authority has no immediate plans to develop the site as a Business Park. I understand that there is still an adequate amount of good quality accommodation suitable for international service type projects available in Galway. As regards developments at UCG, the Deputy will of course be aware that the IDA has funded the building of incubator units on the university's campus and further such units have been planned. These units are geared towards enhancing the links between the college and the IDA in the development of industrial projects.
