asked the Minister for the Environment the amounts of money made available to Limerick County Council for county roads each year for the past ten years, and if he is aware of the insufficiency of the present allocation in even giving minimum basic care to the roads system.
Written Answers. - Road Grant Assistance.
Road grant assistance towards the cost of works on county roads is comprised mainly in the block grant which, in the case of county councils, supplements the provision made by the councils from their own resources for the improvement, maintenance and management of non-national main roads, for improvement works on county roads, and for the implementation of traffic management measures. The disposition of the block grant including the extent, if any, to which it is to be applied to improvement works on county roads is a matter entirely for each council. In accordance with established practice under successive Governments, State grants are not provided for maintenance works on county roads. Expenditure under this heading falls to be financed from the local authorities' own resources.
Since 1981 Limerick County Council has benefited from funds provided for the improvement of county roads under the EC western package. Prior to this year these funds were notified as part of the block grant. The council has also received a number of specific grants for the improvement of county roads in the period since 1975. Details of these grants are set out in the statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Limerick County Council were notified of a block grant commitment of £456,000 for 1985. This is an increase of over 33 per cent on the commitment for 1984. The average increase in block grant to all local authorities in 1985 was about 10 per cent. In addition the council were notified of an EC western package grant of £26,000 for county road improvements.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money made available to each local authority in each year for the past ten years for the primary roads system; and the primary roads mileage involved in each county.
It is assumed that the question refers to the national primary and national secondary road networks which between them account for 35 per cent of road travel. The information requested is contained in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
