Vol. 361 No. 11

Written Answers. - County Limerick Drainage Scheme.

92.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the position with regard to expected redundancies within the Office of Public Works operatives concerned with drainage in County Limerick; and when work on the Mulcaire drainage scheme will get under way.

It is anticipated that construction works on the Maigue scheme will be completed by the summer of 1986. As a consequence redundancies can be expected to take place on a phased basis between early spring and the summer. It is not possible at this juncture, to say how many redundancies will be involved, or what the actual timing of redundancies will be. A relatively small number of workers will be retained as the nucleus of the permanent maintenance workforce.

Work on the design of a drainage scheme for the Mulcaire catchment scheme has been suspended following a Government decision to halt all arterial drainage planning pending the outcome of a review of arterial drainage policy. The review, prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works, is under consideration prior to the submission of proposals to the Government.
