Vol. 361 No. 12

Written Answers. - Road Accident Prevention.

61.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the accident rate in Carrickmacross, on the national primary route, as indicated in a recent survey by An Foras Forbartha the steps he proposes to take in the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the report "Road Accident Facts" for 1984 which was published recently by An Foras Forbartha.

This statistical information contained in the report in relation to Carrickmacross refers to fatal and injury accidents on all public roads in the town over the 17 year period, 1968 to 1984. A breakdown of these statistics as between national and other roads over the same period is not available.

Primary responsibility for evaluating the accident record on public roads rests with road authorities. In undertaking this work, it is open to the authorities to consult with the Department's road inspectors.

The memorandum on road grants for 1985, which was issued by the Department to the authorities, advised them to monitor the network of national roads on a continuous basis, in so far as accident black spots are concerned. Full cost road grants will be available for approved schemes of road improvements designed to eliminate such black spots.
