Vol. 362 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Japanese Investment in EC.

15.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give (i) details of the level and type of Japanese investment in the European Community with particular reference to Ireland and (ii) details relating to the level of the type of Japanese investment in Spain and Portugal which are due to join the European Community on 1 January 1985 and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As part of the answer to this question is in the form of a tabular statement I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

As will be seen, Ireland has done quite well in comparison with other member states of the European Community as far as Japanese manufacturing investment is concerned. The IDA estimate that over 10 per cent of Japanese manufacturing investment in Europe has been located in Ireland. Prospects for future Japanese investment in Europe are good and it is anticipated that Ireland will get a fair share of this investment.

Following is the statement:

Japanese Investment in the countries of the European Community as at end of March 1984

Note:

Figures for EC member states have been supplied by Japanese Ministry of Finance and it is understood are based on applications received by the Ministry. The actual amount of investment may therefore vary to some degree.

Figures for Portugal and Spain have been obtained by the Irish Embassies in these countries from the respective Government authorities.
