Vol. 362 No. 9

Written Answers. - Irish Meat Exports.

155.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the allegation by the Irish Meat Exporters Association made on 3 December 1985 that Irish meat exports are being discriminated against by the British authorities, specifically in relation to the variable premium scheme and the rejection of Irish beef already approved by Irish vets and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under arrangements which obtained since 1974 the UK authorities inspect meat imports in respect of which variable premium is claimed. A proportion of the meat is usually rejected and there have been continuing discussions with the UK authorities about this. The aim of the discussions is to ensure that the premium is paid on all meat complying with the UK standards.

The Commission regulations laying down detailed rules for the application of the premium provide that Ireland and the UK shall take all necessary measures to ensure that Irish meat from the appropriate categories intended for consumption in the UK receives financial advantages equivalent to the slaughtering premium.
