Vol. 362 No. 10

Written Answers. - Postal Voting for Disabled.

24.

asked the Minister for the Environment when it is intended to introduce legislation to give the disabled postal votes at general and presidential elections; if the proposed legislation will provide for the inclusion of disabled persons entitled to postal votes on the electoral register each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I have indicated previously, a Bill is being prepared to provide for a system of postal voting at all elections and referenda. Pending completion of a review of the operation of the postal voting system at the local elections, details of the Bill have not been finalised.

However, the intention is that certain categories of electors, including the disabled, will be entitled to be registered in the register of electors as postal voters. Persons so registered will be entitled to vote by post at any election or referendum which takes place during the currency of the register.
