asked the Minister for Justice the amounts of overtime paid to the Garda Síochána in each Garda division including Dublin city and county each year for the last ten years.
Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 176 and 177 together. As regards the number of hours overtime worked by the Garda in the years 1982 to 1984. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 719 and 720 on 30 April 1985. The corresponding particulars for the years 1978 to 1981 and for 1985 up to 30 September are set out in Table No. 1. These figures do not include Garda headquarters, DMA headquarters and the Training Centre, Templemore. Table No. 2 gives the relevant figures for those offices. Figures for hours of overtime worked in the years before 1978 are not available.
Compilation of the detailed information sought in Question No. 177 in relation to overtime payments, in so far as it is available, would involve diverting Garda manpower from other more pressing duties and I consider that this would not be justified. It is reasonable to assume, however, that the payments would be — for all practical purposes — proportionate to the hours worked and, as the total amount paid in overtime each year is published in the relevant appropriation accounts, substantially accurate figures of payments made may be calculated from the figures of hours of overtime worked.
