Vol. 362 No. 13

Written Answers. - North Sea Fish Quotas.

55.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the efforts being made to secure quotas for our fishermen in the North Sea.

Under the Common Fisheries Policy agreed in January 1983, quotas for particular species were allocated on the basis of historical rights and traditional fishing. On the basis of these criteria, allocations of quota species to Irish fishermen in the North Sea could not be justified. However, it is open to our fishermen to fish for those species which are not subject to quota or for species such as horse mackerel and blue whiting where the total allowable catches are not yet allocated among member states.
