Vol. 363 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rathfarnham (Dublin) Castle.

189.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will extend the six months order designating Rathfarnham Castle as a national monument to the status of a full statutory national monument; if he will further financially assist Dublin County Council in their plans to purchase the castle; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The temporary preservation order made by the Commissioners of Public Works in respect of Rathfarnham Castle acknowledges that the castle, its associated medieval features of architectural and archaeological interest and its amenity area constitute a national monument. The expiry of the order will not alter that but a new order, temporary or permanent, can be made by the commissioners if, in their opinion, the circumstances warrant it. I have no request from Dublin County Council for financial assistance towards the cost of purchasing the castle.
