Vol. 363 No. 1

Written Answers. - Food Hygiene Laws.

17.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that the level of fines permissible for breaches of the food hygiene laws have been described by one regional public analyst as a joke; if he has any plans to amend existing legislation to increase the level of fines; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the fines which may be imposed under the provisions of the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts and the Health Act, 1947, for breaches of food law require to be brought into line with present day money values. A revision of the legislation which would provide for this is under consideration.

I am satisfied however that whatever the levels of the fines which may be imposed the adverse publicity which arises from a conviction in the courts and the consequent implication for the offender's trade or business will continue to be the main deterrent.
