I am not aware of any particular problems relating to the early recognition of mental handicap in the very young. Existing provision includes screening programmes, neo-natal, pre-school developmental and school health examination services. Specialised teams are available throughout the country to carry out detailed assessments on children referred to them with a possible mental handicap.
