Vol. 363 No. 1

Written Answers. - Limerick Inner-City Development.

81.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give specific details of proposals for the inner-city development of Limerick city as recently announced; the proposed dates of commencement of such projects; the numbers of people to be employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details of the special scheme of tax incentives which is to apply to development and reconstruction work in certain inner-city areas of Dublin, Cork and Limerick will be announced as soon as possible together with details of the areas to be designated. These areas will be formally designated following the enactment of the necessary legislation which is at present being drafted and the taxation incentives will be provided for in the Finance Bill. The purpose of these arrangements is to encourage the redevelopment and reconstruction of the designated inner-city areas which are rundown and generally perceived to be unattractive for investment purposes. Since the nature and extent of the projects to be undertaken will depend largely on the response to the scheme from interested builders, developers, traders, etc., I cannot at this stage give an estimate of the numbers likely to be employed on development which will qualify for the incentives.
