Vol. 363 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coroner's Inquest.

181.

asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of the internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a person (details supplied).

Limerick East): It is not clear what internal inquiry the Deputy is referring to. The inquiry which is provided for by law, namely a coroner's inquest, has been concluded in this case, though with inconclusive results in certain respects.

If the Deputy is referring to a Garda investigation into alleged breaches of discipline under the Garda Síochána Discipline Regulations, the position is that the discipline regulations prescribe a formal set of procedures for investigations of this kind. I am informed that these procedures are already in progress but may take some time to complete. However, I should make it clear that, under the terms of the discipline regulations, the conduct of disciplinary proceedings is a matter for the Garda authorities.
