Vol. 363 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Road Tax.

70.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of road tax collected by each local authority in 1985; and if he intends to reconstitute the road fund.

The estimated total revenue collected by all licensing authorities in 1985 by way of motor tax, driver licence fees, etc., was £117 million. Information on the amount collected by each authority is not yet available in my Department. I will forward the information to the Deputy as soon as it is available.

I have no proposals to reconstitute the road fund. The amount of State expenditure on roads is determined mainly by reference to road needs and overall Exchequer resources. In 1985, State expenditure on road works, at £153.5 million, exceeded the revenue which would have been assigned to the road fund if it had still been in existence.
