Vol. 363 No. 8

Written Answers. - Agricultural Schemes.

63.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the basis on which the estimate under M1, farm modernisation scheme, is increased from £18.3 million in 1985 to £29.2 million in 1986; and the basis on which the estimate under M10, scheme for cessation of milk production, is increased from £476,000 in 1985 to £1.03 million in 1986.

The estimate of £26 million for subhead M1 is the amount considered necessary to meet expected expenditure in 1986 on the various measures provided for under this subhead.

The increase under subhead M10 arises because every producer participating in the scheme will surrender his full quota for 1985-86 whereas in 1984-85 many of the producers had delivered all or portion of their quotas prior to their selection for the scheme.

64.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of farmers who have applied for aid under the weather damage relief scheme (D7); and the basis on which it is estimated that £16.65 million more will be required in 1986.

The total number of applications for aid under the various weather damage relief schemes was approximately 150,000. The £19.65 million estimated to be required in 1986 is made up of £17.65 million to cover the cost of the feed voucher scheme and outstanding payments under the silage making, fertiliser and Shannon Valley flood schemes plus £2 million in respect of the recently introduced working capital scheme for tillage farmers.
