Vol. 363 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Mayo Schools.

193.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the resentment among parents of children attending Creevagh national school, County Mayo, at the deplorable condition of the school and the failure of her Department to commence the new replacement school; and if she will give a date for the commencement of building of the new school before more children are withdrawn from the school.

My Department has agreed to grant-aid the replacement of the existing unsuitable national school building at Creevagh, Carrowmore-Lacken, Ballina, County Mayo, with a new semi-permanent two-classroom school building. A grant in that connection was formally sanctioned on 20 December 1985. The completion of arrangements for the placing of a contract await confirmation from the proposed contractor that he will be able to meet the conditions of the local authority planning permission without extra cost. While I am not in a position to give a precise date for the commencement of work, it is expected that the contract will be placed at a very early date.

asked the Minister for Education when the extension to Currabaggin national school, Knockmore, Ballina, County Mayo, will commence; if she is aware of the anxiety of parents, teachers and pupils in relation to the overcrowded conditions that exist at Currabaggin; and if she will allow the project to go to tender.

The bills of quantities for the proposed extension to Currabaggin national school, Ballina, County Mayo, have now been completed. It is expected that tenders will be invited at an early date for this project. I am not in a position at this stage to say when building work may commence.
