Vol. 363 No. 11

Written Answers. - Road Safety Improvement.

24.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is concerned at the risk to safety caused by the deterioration in the surface of many of our roads; and the plans he has to restore them to an acceptable level.

The improvement of road safety and the preservation, through proper maintenance, of existing and planned road investment are among the main aims of the Government's road development policy. The strategy for implementation of this policy and the manner of financing of the policy are set out in chapter 3 of the road plan which I published in January 1985. The major road improvements carried out in recent years and the improvement in the standard of maintenance of the principal traffic routes in this period have been important factors in the reduction of 38 per cent in the number of road deaths from 628 in 1978 to 416 in 1985.
