asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money allocated per mile for county roads in each county for 1984, 1985 and 1986.
I presume the Deputy is referring to road grants provided by my Department. Road grant assistance towards the cost of works on county roads normally forms part of the block grant paid annually by my Department. This grant supplements the provision made from local authorities' own resources for the improvement, maintenance and management of non-national main roads, for improvement works on county roads, and for the implementation of traffic management measures. The manner in which the block grant is spent, the extent to which it is apportioned to county road improvement, and the rate per mile of county roads which this represents are largely within the discretion of each local authority. In the circumstances, I am not in a position to provide the information sought by the Deputy.
Block grants allocated to local authorities for 1986 total £20.4 million which is 21 per cent higher than the equivalent grants in 1985 which, in turn, were 10 per cent greater than the 1984 grants. In accordance with the practice of successive Governments, State road grants are not made available for county road maintenance. Expenditure under this heading falls to be met from local authorities' own resources.
