When it became apparent late last year that the Canadian authorities were actively considering further restrictions on imports of Community beef, I immediately took the matter up with the Commission which negotiates for the Community in matters of this kind. My Department have been constantly in touch with them since then and have focused attention on the implications for Ireland of any such restrictive measures. It is understood that the Commission have now reached a provisional agreement with Canada, subject to ratification, and that this would allow trade to continue at the same level as in 1985, viz, 10,668 tonnes.
