Vol. 363 No. 13

Written Answers. - Land Registry Office.

215.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the long delays in the Land Registry Office; and the action he intends to take to alleviate the situation in the near future.

I am aware that there are delays in the Land Registry. I am informed by the Registrar of titles that the length of these delays varies according to the category of work involved. The delays are due to an increase in the intake of work in recent years and the cuts in staff which have resulted from the staffing restrictions which apply to the Civil Service generally. Within these constraints everything possible has been and is being done to reduce the delays in the Registry.

A programme of computerising the Land Registry folios commenced in 1982. The Dublin folios have all been computerised and this has helped to increase efficiency in this area. It is hoped that it will be possible to extend the programme to other areas. The possibility of computerising map details is being considered also. The introduction of a word processor in the ground rents section has helped to decrease arrears considerably and consequently reduce delays. Other developments such as the use of personal computers and the redistribution of work are being considered at present.
