Vol. 363 No. 13

Written Answers. - Hake Quota.

36.

asked the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism if he is aware of the huge quota of hake which has been allocated to Spanish fishermen; and if he has any proposals to seek an increase on the Irish quota.

The quota of 18,000 tonnes of hake allocated to Spain in 1986 takes account of provisions agreed as part of the Act of Accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Community. This quota includes a flatrate amount of 4,500 tonnes, which will only be applicable for a three-year period. The Irish quota of 1,550 tonnes in 1986 represents an increase of 8 per cent approx. On last year's quota. I can assure the Deputy that I will continue to press for the highest possible quotas for our fishermen whenever the opportunity arises.
