Vol. 363 No. 13

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishermen's Training Centres.

6.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism the courses etc. which have been organised for 1986 at the National Training Centre for Fishermen; and if he has any proposals to expand the programme.

The following courses have been organised for 1986 at the National Training Centre for Fishermen at Greencastle: Fishing Deckhand Basic Course, two; Fishing Deckhand Advanced Course, two; Fishing Certificates of Competency, ten; Heavy Engine Course, one; Mariculture Course, two; Sea Survival Course, six; Radio Certificate Course, four. No further expansion of the training programme at Greencastle is envisaged for 1986.

Mr. Coughlan

In view of the technological advances in the past number of years, will the Minister state if courses are available for younger fishermen in relation to high technology for use on the new trawlers? If they are not, will he say when they may become available?

I have given details of the courses that are organised for the present year. No further courses are envisaged. However, I will look at the matter when I get an opportunity to do so.

Mr. Coughlan

We have a regional technical college in Letterkenny, an hotels schools in Killybegs and the training centre at Greencastle.

If these schools were amalgamated we could probably find that courses run in one or all of them would be of advantage to the fishing fraternity. If such proposals were put to the Minister, would he consider having them investigated?

If the Deputy puts forward that proposal, which was not included in this question, I will be glad to look at it.

asked the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism the number of persons who have completed training courses at the National Fishery Training Centre at Greencastle, County Donegal, since 1982, and if he has any estimate of the percentage of these who (a) subsequently found employment in the fishing industry, and (b) are still employed in the industry.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

In addition to the Greencastle school BIM also operate a mobile training unit and the figures in column 3 relate to this.
