Vol. 363 No. 15

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Future of Former Distillery Buildings.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of observations by An Taisce in relation to the imminent demolition of buildings owned by the Office of Public Works at Smithfield, namely the former distillery buildings which are of architectural significance and historically important also; and if he will agree that the site clearance should not take place until the conversion potential of the buildings is fully assessed and a firm use is determined for the future of this site.

I am aware of observations by An Taisce in relation to the proposed demolition of the former distillery buildings at Smithfield. The conversion potential of the buildings has been given very serious consideration but conversion is regarded as being neither practical nor economic. Due to their dangerous condition it is necessary to undertake an early major but not total site clearance. Account has been taken of the architectural merits of certain features and elements on the site and these are being retained and I hope can be combined in any new development.

Has a firm use been determined for the future of the site? I am sure the Minister of State would not wish to create another derelict site in a city already blighted by such derelict sites. Are there plans for using that site in some useful way?

Discussions have been held in relation to that and I understand that the Taoiseach made some reference to it in this House some time ago, I understand that the matter has not been clarified or finalised with the Department of Finance.

Will the Minister of State use her good offices to try to ensure that no unnecessary demolition of these buildings, which are important and significant historically and architecturally, will take place until the possibility of them lying derelict for the next decade or two — as is not unusual in certain OPW areas of jurisdiction — can be avoided so that we will get the buildings with a new use brought on-stream as quickly as possible?

I note the points raised by the Deputy and I will bear them in mind.
