My Department commissioned consultants to carry out research on the potential of technology to meet the needs of dependent elderly persons living alone. This research will form the basis for guidelines which my Department will issue to health boards advising them on the most appropriate alarm systems to assist frail or infirm elderly persons living alone. It will be a matter for each health board to decide whether or not to provide or grant aid the provision of an alarm system in the light of individual circumstances and in the light of their own priorities and resources.
