Vol. 364 No. 1

Written Answers. - Boyne Drainage Scheme Maintenance.

87.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will remove the statutory demand made by the Office of Public Works in respect of the maintenance of the Boyne drainage which is having a severe effect on the finances of the county councils of Counties Offaly, Kildare, Meath, Cavan and Westmeath, in view of the fact that this is the first time this demand has been made on these councils.

These charges are required by law — namely section 37 of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. They have been levied on county councils covering completed river catchment areas since 1956.
