Vol. 364 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Monaghan Drainage Scheme Maintenance.

89.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of the allocation which was spent on the Glyde and Dee in County Monaghan in the years 1983, 1984 and 1985; and the amount allocated for 1986.

Maintenance of completed arterial drainage schemes is carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works on a catchment basis. In accordance with the requirements of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, the costs incurred are recoverable from the relevant county councils, not on the basis of expenditure on maintenance works within a particular county, but in proportion to the value of the benefit to lands in each county within the catchment, arising from the arterial drainage scheme. Expenditure on maintenance of the Glyde and Dee is recorded accordingly.

The relevant amounts in respect of County Monaghan for the period 1983-85 are as follows:

1983

£45,500

1984

£44,900

1985

£44,500

The amount quoted for 1985 is provisional, as final figures for any particular year are not available for some months afterwards, when all the costs incurred in the year in question have been discharged. The estimated amount recoverable from Monaghan County Council in 1986 is of the order of £50,000.
