asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each Garda division, the number of hours of overtime and the cost for each of the months from July to December 1985 and the comparable figures for each of the previous three years.
Written Answers. - Garda Overtime.
Figures relating to the total number of hours of overtime worked by the Garda for each of the years 1982 to 1984 and for 1985 up to 30 September were included in the replies to Questions Nos. 719 and 720 on 30 April 1985 and Questions Nos. 176 and 177 on 17 December 1985. Figures for the total number of hours of overtime worked by the Garda in each division during 1985 are set out in the following table. Compilation of the further details sought about the hours of overtime worked in those periods would involve a disproportionate amount of time and resources. Garda organisation is, in general, linked to what are referred to as "roster periods" and not to calendar months and records of overtime, etc., reflect that fact.
As regards the details sought in the question in relation to the cost of Garda overtime, I would refer the Deputy to the final paragraph of the reply to Questions Nos. 176 and 177 on 17 December 1985 in so far as the years 1982 to 1984 are concerned. The provisional outturn of expenditure on overtime on the Garda Síochána Vote in 1985 is £12.5 million.
