Vol. 364 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Curriculum and Examinations Board.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the representative structures of the proposed statutory curriculum examination assessment board.

It would not be appropriate for me to give particulars of the structures proposed for the statutory Curriculum and Examinations Board in advance of approval by the Government of the detailed provisions of the draft of the establishing Bill and of its presentation to Dáil Éireann.

Could the Minister say when it is proposed to introduce this Bill? Because of the very sensitive and responsible nature of education, does he agree that people will be watching the make up of the representative groupings on this statutory board, particularly with regard to their apolitical standing? Does he also agree that such a board should be free from any taint of political appointment or patronage, particularly relating to education?

I cannot give the Deputy a date on which the Bill will be introduced but it is at an advanced state of preparation and I am anxious to introduce it as soon as possible. The Deputy may rest assured that the appointments to be made to the board in due course will be made in the best interests of education and of the needs of the country.

There will be no jobs for the boys or girls?
