Vol. 364 No. 7

Written Answers. - Open Space Development.

51.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of any financial allocations made to local authorities for the development of open space or playing field facilities in the past three years.

In general, the funding of open space or playing field development is a matter for local authorities themselves using their own sources of finance, supplemented by the rates support garnts payable by my Department and occasionally by borrowed moneys.

A loan of £280,000 was sanctioned in 1983 for the purchase by Westmeath County Council of Belvedere House and estate for open space purposes. In 1985, a loan of £150,000 was sanctioned for the purchase by Dublin Corporation of lands for a public park along the Dodder River between Milltown and Clonskeagh.

A special grant of £300,000 was made by my Department last year towards the provision of a park in Cork to mark the 800th anniversary of the city.

Grant assistance was made available under the environment works scheme in the period in question for a wide variety of environmental works, some of which involved open space development. The capital cost of open space development in new local authority housing scheme, — normally 10 per cent of site area — is met in full by my Department.
