Vol. 365 No. 1

Written Answers. - Monaghan River Pollution.

63.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is concerned about the level of pollution in the Mullaghduff river, County Monaghan; the action he proposes to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While I am always concerned about pollution, it is a matter for each local authority to decide on the measures necessary to deal with water pollution in their functional area.

I understand that, in this case, Monaghan County Council have been endeavouring to improve the condition of the Mullaghduff river and towards this end have availed of their powers under the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977. In particular, the council have served notices under section 12 of the Act requiring measures to be taken to prevent pollution of the river. I am informed that the council are continuing to monitor the position.
