The establishment of fish processing plants is primarily a matter for private enterprise. In order to promote such development financial assistance is provided by State agencies such as the Industrial Development Authority and Údarás na Gaeltachta, as appropriate, for suitable projects. Such projects can also attract grant aid from the European Community's FEOGA fund.
During the past five years 152 projects with a total fixed asset investment of £36.4 million were approved for State aid amounting to £10.3 million.
