Vol. 365 No. 6

Written Answers. - Grant Payment.

70.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kerry has not been paid money due to him for the repair work carried out to the primary school and the boys post-primary school in Kenmare, County Kerry, since September 1984.

The contract in respect of the primary school referred to in Kenmare, County Kerry, was between the chairman of the school's board of management and the main contractor. The chairman is responsible for all payments under the contract, and my Department's function is to pay the appropriate grant on foot of certificates of satisfactory completion of work submitted by the chairman from his professional advisers without prejudice to the chairman's discretion as to apportionment of payments between contractors. Interim grant payments have been made to the chairman during the course of construction of the school. Following submission in October 1984 of the final account for the project, a further substantial interim grant payment was made. In accordance with normal practice a small balance of grant was retained to cover defects in the mechanical and electrical installations.

As a result of the inspection of these installations and further recent work in my Department on the final account, it is expected that another interim grant payment can be released to the chairman at an early date, and that the final account will be cleared in full in the near future, when any outstanding grant payments will be discharged. Any payment due in respect of the type of work carried out to the post-primary school in question is a matter to be dealt with by the authorities of that school.
