Vol. 365 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waste Products Disposal.

11.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the arrangements in his Department for the monitoring and control of the disposal of waste products.

The supervision and management of waste disposal operations in each area is the responsibility of the county council or county borough corporation concerned and decisions on disposal methods are a matter for these authorities. While my Department have issued guidelines to local authorities on selection and design aspects of disposal sites, they are not directly involved in the monitoring and control of waste disposal generally.

Does the Minister intend to develop a national waste disposal for toxic waste?

Under the European Communities Toxic and Dangerous Waste Regulations, 1982, the local authorities, county councils, county borough corporations and Dún Laoghaire Corporation are responsible for the planning and oversight of toxic waste disposal.

Will the Minister use his good offices and make another suggestion which I give, since he took my last suggestion on board? Will he make representations to his political colleagues on Dublin County Council to take a responsible attitude in regard to the disposal of non-toxic and non-hazardous industrial waste?

That is argumentative.

I try not to become involved in local matters like that.

Could the kid brother do it?
