Vol. 365 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Border Road.

4.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the deplorable condition of the road at the Carrickarnon frontier post and the similar condition at the Dundalk road station on the Newry Road, Dundalk; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The locations in question are on the National Primary Route N.1. in the administrative areas of Louth County Council and Dundalk Urban District Council respectively. Primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any road improvements considered necessary at these locations rests with the local authorities. The full cost of approved schemes of work would qualify for State road grant assistance.

I am aware that some deterioration has occurred on the hardshoulder at Carrickarnon. This is largely due to parking and turning movements of heavy commercial vehicles. In order to remedy the situation, road grants totalling £505,000, including £100,000 in 1986, have been made available for the provision of parking accommodation for lorries and improvement of the immediate access to this park. Louth County Council expect that the lorrypark should be completed by the middle of June.

Dundalk Urban District Council are monitoring the condition of the road surface in the vicinity of the customs station at Newry Road with a view to carrying out maintenance works as the need arises.
