Vol. 366 No. 2

Written Answers. - White Paper on Tourism.

32.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the steps he is taking to implement the undertaking in the White Paper on Tourism in so far as environmental matters are concerned.

In response to the White Paper on Tourism Policy, Bord Fáilte have embarked on a much more active role in relation to promoting an attractive environment for tourists. This has involved increased contacts with local authorities on matters ranging from planning policy to litter bin designs. Moreover, a series of special new awards under the Bord's civic awards scheme have been introduced which will encourage local efforts in the improvement of beaches, urban areas, commercial streets and local authority housing estates.

In addition, discussions are taking place to harmonise the requirements of local authorities and Bord Fáilte in respect of caravan and camping sites. The other matters relating to the environment in the White Paper on Tourism Policy are the responsibility of other Ministers.
