Vol. 366 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oil Price Reduction.

5.

Mr. Fahey

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is the Government's intention to allow the current reduction in the oil prices to be passed on in full to the consumer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is inquiring about the Government's intentions regarding taxation on petroleum products. The Government have no plans at this time to increase taxes on oil products.

I am sure that the Deputy is aware of the concern expressed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce about the price of petrol at the pumps. That Minister has had discussions with the trade about this matter and he is having a survey of petrol prices carried out to determine if the desired result has been achieved.

Could the Minister indicate how he proposes to monitor this situation and ensure that the price reduction will be passed on to the consumer?

That is a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
