Limerick East): I am advised by the Industrial Development Authority that, on the basis of information obtained through its employment surveys in the period January 1983 to November 1985, the information requested by the Deputy in respect of new small industries established with IDA assistance is as follows:

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the volume and proportion of output and exports from small firms in the manufacturing sector, as defined under the IDA small industries programme.

Limerick East): I am advised that the Central Statistics Office does not differentiate in its data on manufacturing industry between firms of different sizes. Official information of the type requested by the Deputy is not, therefore, available.

However, on the basis of internal surveys conducted by the State agencies under the aegis of my Department, it is estimated that between 6 per cent and 7 per cent of the value of manufacturing output relates to small firms. It is estimated that a similar percentage of total manufactured exports is attributable to small firms. An estimate of the volume of output by small firms is not available.
