Vol. 367 No. 2

Written Answers. - Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Allowance.

76.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Health with reference to his oral reply to Deputy Cowen's Parliamentary Question No. 17 of 15 April 1986 if he is aware of the reduction of over £9 per week to persons entitled to a disabled persons rehabilitation allowance in the Midland Health Board Area; and if he will supply the necessary funds to rectify this appalling situation which has arisen for employees in the rehab centres, instances of such cases being brought to Deputy Cowen's attention in Tullamore, due to the cut in subsidy from the health board to these centres.

The purpose of the disabled persons rehabilitation allowance is to provide an income for persons who are pursuing a suitable course of rehabilitation training for the disabled. The Midland Health Board is of the view that disabled persons who are in training for a period exceeding three years can no longer be deemed to be in receipt of training proper, and are in fact in sheltered employment. An allowance at the rate approcriate to those not in training is therefore paid to such persons.
