asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of people recruited in the Civil Service for each of the last three years.
Written Answers. - Civil Service Recruitment.
The numbers of staff recruited to the Civil Service for the past three years is as follows: 1983 (estimate), 1,140; 1984, 617; 1985, 1,375. The 1983 figure excludes recruitment to the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of civil servants attached to each Government Department in each county; and if he will make a statement on the Government's policy on new recruitment to the Civil Service.
The reply to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
As regards recruitment policy, while the Government remain committed to reducing the size of the Civil Service, they are concerned that worthwhile job creation initiatives should not be neglected. The highly successful schemes of job sharing and career breaks which they have introduced have resulted in the provision of some 1,700 extra jobs in the Civil Service at minimal or no extra cost. Also 1,000 school leavers were taken on in 1985 as temporary clerical trainees for the purpose of giving them work experience over the period of a year. This latter programme will be continued on the same scale and the 1986 intake of trainees will take place later in the year. It is estimated that, apart from the intake of trainees, recruitment to the Civil Service will be of the order of 1,000 in 1986.
Following is the statement:
Numbers of non-industrial civil servants serving in each Government Department in each county on 1st January 1986.*
