Vol. 368 No. 3

Written Answers. - Family Planning Services.

27.

asked the Minister for Health if he is satisfied with the progress being made by the Area Health Boards in providing family planning services in accordance with the terms of the Health (Family Planning) (Amendment) Act, 1985, particularly in the Eastern Health Board area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that there has been a considerable improvement in the availability of family planning services generally throughout the country since the passage of the amending legislation. I am aware that a number of health boards have made significant progress in facilitating this improvement. The plans for the development of family planning services prepared by the boards are still under discussion between my Department and the boards concerned.

I am also aware that plans are in preparation for a considerable development in training of general practitioners in family planning matters and this will further enhance the availability of services. I am advised that the Eastern Health Board propose to hold a special meeting to discuss family planning matters in general within their area. I am disappointed that it has not proved possible for the board to adopt a definitive statement of policy by this time. However, the board are involved in a number of pilot schemes for the provision of family planning services and are actively analysing the extent of the availability of services from general practitioners, pharmaceutical chemists and other sources within their area.
