Vol. 368 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Employment Exchanges.

23.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in view of the increased cost of bus fares, she will introduce a system of bus vouchers for the unemployed who have to travel to employment exchanges each week to sign on, or to waive the requirement to sign on each week, particularly where people are receiving only small payments; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

It is assumed that the reference in the Deputy's question to employment exchanges relates to the Dublin area. In recent years new offices have been opened in the Navan Road, Thomas Street, Tallaght, Tara Street and Ballymun. It is proposed to open further exchanges in Clondalkin, Rathfarnham, Coolock, Finglas, Blanchardstown and Ballyfermot. Bringing services to areas where they are needed in considered to be the most satisfactory way of dealing with this matter. A system of vouchers as envisaged by the Deputy would be costly in itself and would also be costly as well as difficult to administer.
