The total amount of excise duty and value-added tax in £10 worth of premium grade petrol is £6.54 at present.
The excise duty on a new motor car with a recommended retail sale price of £10,000 is £2,470 if the engine capacity exceeds 2012 cc or £2,170 otherwise. The value-added tax on a motor car with a sale price of £10,000 is £2,000.
Motor cars and petrol may be liable to customs duty if imported from outside the EC. The full rate of customs duty on petrol is 6 per cent of the import value. The full rate of customs duty on motor cars with either spark ignition or compression ignition engines is 10 per cent of the import value and on motor cars with other engines is 12.5 per cent. Where a preferential agreement exists between the country of origin and the EC, lower rates of customs duty may apply.
