Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kerry TV Reception.

238.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will allocate some of the moneys made available to the Garda for the provision of a modern sophisticated communications system in County Kerry to holders of TV licences in the Castle-gregory, Camp, Annascaul, Glenbeigh and Kells area to enable them to remedy the exceptionally poor TV reception arising from the use of the Garda radio equipment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The matter of providing an adequate television signal in any particular area is the responsibility of RTE and I understand that RTE are at present considering how the reception problems in the areas referred to in the question can be overcome. The Garda authorities are taking part in discussions with RTE on the matter and are willing to co-operate in any way open to them. However, I wish to emphasise that, as stated by my predecessor in reply to a similar Parliamentary Question (No. 166) on 19 November 1985, the radio equipment and transmission channels being used by the gardaí meet with the approval of the appropriate licencing authority.
