Vol. 368 No. 8

Written Answers. - Trial of Turkish Trade Unionist.

35.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that a leading Turkish trade unionist, Muzaffer Sarac, is at present standing trial in Turkey on a charge of slandering the Turkish State on the basis of a speech he made to a public meeting in Dublin in June 1985; if he has made any representations to the Turkish authorities on this matter, or if any are planned; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of reports that Mr. Sarac is on trial for slandering the Turkish State abroad. I have made inquiries through diplomatic channels for information on this case. So far, these have been without result, but I intend to continue seeking for this information.
