Vol. 368 No. 9

Written Answers. - Child Dependency Allowances.

83.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if she thinks it appropriate to rationalise the present system of child dependency allowances under which there are at present 36 different rates of payment; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The need for a rationalisation of the rates of payments for child dependants under the social welfare system is accepted. The Commission on Social Welfare has also recommended the rationalisation of these payments and has suggested one single payment for all child dependants. The commission's report is at present being considered and the question also arises for consideration in the context of introducing the fully taxable child benefit scheme which is part of the Government's plan for the development of a system of family income support.
